Elkhorn City School Apartments are the adaptive reuse of the original Elkhorn City High School into 27 affordable units for families. The old Elkhorn City High School stands in Elkhorn City, a town about 20 miles southeast of Pikeville, Kentucky, the county seat.

The school was built in 1938 using funds from the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The old high school is the most prominent one of the three National Register contributing buildings on the 6.8-acre parcel which is surrounded by State Route 197 and the Elkhorn Creek at its confluence into the Russell Fork. The site of the old Elkhorn City High School sits near the heart of the city. Originally constructed in 1938, this historic building is able to maintain historic charm and amenities: original hardwood floors and windows, tall ceilings, and wide hallways.

Walking through the renovated building, it is easy to recognize where former spaces that classrooms, lockers, the principle’s office, stage, cafeteria and even the gymnasium once occupied. Two-story loft units now occupy the space where the gymnasium once stood.

Completed in January 2019, the Elkhorn City School Apartments offer loft, one, two and three bedroom units and a wide array of modern amenities.
