Thomas Edison School Apartments

The Thomas Edison School, listed on the National Register as the Fourth District Elementary School, was built in 1939 and is located in Covington, Kentucky. The Thomas Edison School has been transformed into 26 units of quality, affordable rental housing for families. Funding was awarded in June 2010, construction began in February 2011, and the building was dedicated in January 2012.


From the building’s opening in 1939 until its closing over 70 years later, Thomas Edison Elementary School educated multiple generations of Covington families in its classrooms. Originally built as the Fourth District Elementary School, the school retains its original Art Deco details and charm, including stainless steel railings and proscenium, terrazzo floors, and a linoleum nursery tale mural.


The original classrooms have been carefully and expertly transformed into comfortable apartments which include all modern systems and amenities. The apartments feature high ceilings, abundant light, spacious closets, individually controlled thermostats, and fully equipped kitchens. There are 26 gracious apartments in total with 14 one-bedroom units, 8 two-bedroom units, and 4 three-bedroom units. A furnished Community Room, tenant storage area, and outdoor courtyard serve all residents.


The Edison School Apartments offer convenient, comfortable, and affordable living through financing from the Kentucky Housing Corporation as well as US Bank, The Kentucky Heritage Council, Community Affordable Housing Equity Corporation and the City of Covington. Income restrictions apply for all apartments.
